The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has published a report ‘The Cyber Threat to Sports Organisations’. The report gives several case studies including one of ransomware that led to the shutdown of the CCTV and turnstile systems of an English Football League club – which resulted in several hundreds of thousands of pounds of losses.
It appears that the club was hacked through its CCTV system. There is a common misconception is that an attack will come through servers, but no system is free from a physical hack. In reality hackers look for the point of least resistance to strike.
This could be a guide to future cyber-attacks – cyber criminals preventing access to shopping centres, office buildings, or any venue with paying customers, (i.e. preventing access to property, not just data).
